Cross Talk by Deborah Tannen

Deborah Tannen’s essay called“Cross Talk” talks about situations and problems women and men have communicating. She mentions how men believe they are superior to women particularly in the workforce. Men think they are subordinate by a women’s authority and this makes them uncomfortable. One difference is in the way women relate; they communicate to establish a relationship and a connection while men use language to negotiate their status in levels of importance.  The author conclusion is flexibility; knowing how to communicate by approaching in a different way rather than trying to do more or the same. Tannen uses a comparison and contrast method and classify them in different styles of communication.

Tannen states “If we talk like women, we are not respected. If we talk like men, we are not liked” (Tannen 377). In this quote, Tannen women have it tough in a world of men, because both ways they either lose or lose. “Women use language to create connection and rapport; men use it to negotiate their status in a hierarchical order.” (Tannen 376). Here, the author uses contrast to explain the difference between men and women use of language to express their opinion of view.

How to E-File a Court Document.

You must be thinking “why would I even want to know that?”, and in reality it’s not as useful as other procedures or How to’s. But if you’re looking into a law field or to work at a law office as a assistant it does come in handy more then you would imagine. I personally am a receptionist at a law firm, and usually a receptionist just answers phone calls and welcomes clients who come in. I wouldn’t have thought I would have to learn how to do such an important task. Every lawyer has to do this because if not whatever order or notice they are trying to process won’t be approved by a judge.

First step in e-filing lets say a Notice of Subpoena Duces Tecum (which is a order by law telling you, you have to appear at the place indicated and cannot for whatever circumstances miss unless told so by the lawyer who subpoenaed you) you have to check more then once the word document you did and check if the place is correct, if the case name is correct and especially the case number. Case number is the make or break. Without a case number or correct one you’re screwed when you E-file it, it’s useless. So as I said re read and edit whatever mistake on your word document before converting it into a PDF .

After you checked and converted the document into a PDF.file you must go into the Miami dade clerk’s website look for the Florida Courts efilinh portal option on the left side of the page it will open a new window for you where you would see a log in and password box. Of course if you yourself are the attorney you would know your information to get in and if you’re not then you must have permission by the firm to get a hold of the password and username. Let’s assume you do and type it in and vua-la you’re logged on ready to start. You would choose the existing case and FILE NOW option.

Continue to scroll down and click the attorney’s name in which you are filing for if there is more then one in the firm. You will now click if it is a motion, a order or a notice. As I said we are filing a Notice of Subpoena Duces Tecum so you would choose the notice option. Click the name Click upload file, find the folder you saved it in, again make sure it is a PDF if not the website will not let you upload it in word form. After uploading it you will have a few basic things to enter like the name of the motion, number of pages the document is and pick the the opposing counsel in which the judge should send the approval to also.

The last step is to review before actually entering in the court system. You have the option to read the file once more. Re check the case number, re check the number of pages it actually has, the pricing should say $0 unless it is a special or emergency motion. You would click submit and copy the reference number given in case there is a misunderstanding later on.

It is not as hard as it sounds but it does take alot of caution, and make sure there are absolutely no mistakes. It is very important that there isn’t because then it is your butt and the attorney’s butt on the line. Sometimes there is time to be able to fix it but other times you will be screwed. It is always best to send an email with the attachment to the opossing councel incase the court does not send it to them for whatever reasom, i mean there is over 1000 cases in Florida. There you have it How to E-File a Court Document.

My Dog ate my flash drive, and other tales of woe by Carolyn Foster Segal

In this essay,  the author gives us examples of excuses the students gives for not turning in an assignment on time, giving from her own personal experiance as a English professor at Cedar Crest College. She categorizes the most used excuses by The Family, The Best Friend, The Evils of Dorm Life, The Evils of Technology and The tally Bizarre excuses. These are the famous excuses , famous because they have been used ove and over for decades. . After categorzing each she then breaks i down even more with the examples and for most tells a little story or anecdote. In each category, the author uses humor to exemplify the student’s creativity when presenting their excuses for not completing the assignment on time.

The author gives several examples for each category “My roommate, who is a horrible perso, likes to party, and I, who am a good person, cannot concentrate onn my work when she is partying”(Segal 317). Here, is an exampple from the category The Evils of Dorm Life, where the individual blames the roomate for not being ableto do the homwork because the lack of concentration. Theymay even broad it out to the people next door or just people outside “(a) on of them had boyfriend/girlfriend problems; (b) one of them was throwing up blood; or (c) someone, somewhere died ” (Segal 318).

5 people who have influenced me the most and 5 people who have negatively challenged me

Influential:

Professor Sanchez: my algebra professor which I see only on Saturdays. For a class from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, which sounds like such a drag, right? Well actually he’s made it so interesting that you don’t even feel the hours pass by. He’s taught the class that to not always be mad at the world when you can easily be thankful in seeing another day.

Professor Wolf: My speech professor, is a laid back old man, he knows his stuff and how to keep a speech class entertained. There has never been a dull moment since the semester started. He always starts his class with “I can’t wait to see what happens”, and that just gives us a boost up, that the class will have some “OMG” moment

Nephews: Although i have known them all their life, once i started college, my purpose to keep going was way higher because they saw a great influence of me on to them, especially my eldest nephew, everytime i show him i’m working on a paper and later on the week i show him my grade, he always responds me with “Im going to be a nerd just like you, watch!” So it’s a bigger push to me to keep going for them.

Mom: In everything i have done, she been a great influence on me, of course she’s my mother. Im lucky though, that she never doubted me that i would get to college without a problem. Now that I am here, and show her my exam grades it doesn’t surprise her because she knows i can do all that and more. The fact im her last child, makes me want to make her as proud as possible.

Sister: She as been like a second mother to me, and she doubted me for a while or more like she was scared I would give up like she did when she started college, so her thoughts, and doubts make me stronger and eventually prove to her I can make her proud of eveyrhting she didn’t see in herself, she can see in me.

Challenging:

Prof Chung: My accounting professor is tough one. She’s not horrible at all, but nor is she a soft cookie to get through. The class isnt easy enough and it’s a bit harder with her but i think eventually it will be for the best and be worth her teaching style towards the end.

Dad: I love my dad, he’d awesome of course. He’s a straight to the point kind of man, so we bump heads a lot, naturally. EVer since I started college, he’s made situations a little harder, because he doesn’t understand there is a difference between easy high school to complicated college works, how ever it is he sets his mind, that’s it no way out so it’s tough getting things done here without his understandment.

Friends: A lot of my friends have the same personality as me, and that’s what makes our friendship work but their motivation isn’t as high as mine. I’m the only one from my highschool close friends that started college, so it is hard trying to balance a social life with school life. They don’t always understand i do get busy studying and have no free time sometimes, since they have all the free time, it is tough for them to be okay with me missing out on a lot of the get togethers.

No name lab partner: Working, well trying to work with this individual has been a great hassle, bt you have to work with what you get. It gets so hard to come to a conclusion for assignments, and that’s normal im sure you must think, NO it is not normal that we never  get to a resolution. Half a semester to go , I CAN DO IT

5th person: im sorry no one else has challenged me in this month that school has started

On the Internet, It’s All About “My” by David Browne

The essay “On the Internet, It’s All about “My” was about the trends that corporations picks up from major businesses. The essay explains many “my” sites aim to emaculate homegrown Web sites or trends.. One of the trends that they mention is the prefix ‘my’ for example Myspace.com, MyCokeRewards.com, MyAOL, etc,.  David Browne reconizied the patterns that arose all on its own. Ten years ago in the essay its said that using the prefix “my” was majorly less used then it is now, it has increased through the years. It has become an easy a popular for consumers and corporations.

The written lesson is ito inform. The author is letting people know that trends in the corporation use to connect between customers or to elivate its business.. “The “my” prefix has become an easy and increasingly popular shorthand for suggesting that bond between consumers and corporations”(Browne 247). “”My” is the latest in a line of prefixes that have ebbed and flowed on the Web. A decade ago, everything was “e” ”(Browne 247). These two quotes show what using “my” does for a business and how each year or decade as they said the prefix changes. Each new change makes something more of the website and corporation using it.

Like finishing a book and starting a whole new one.

The author Gavin Rember purpose is to inform his readers how and why there was so much hate towards this place. The way he described the Denver Department of Social Services office , made even the reader never go or even think about the place like when he said, “The waiting area was filthy, unorganized, and overcrowded… PARENTS PLEASE QUIET YOUR ” (Rember 143).

Good Morning Sunshine to Giacomo Bacigalupo

Good morning sunshine! As much as waking up this early for college sucks! Hey! At least you’re up, so don’t walk around with a face of “FML”, smile man, be happy don’t worry ‘cause every little thing is going to be alright. Usually if I’m cool with a person, I start their day off like that. So most likely if I see you al droopy, I’ll come out with a loud shout saying “GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE!” By the way, you’re shoe laces are extra bright, that while writing this, it’s all I see by the corner of my eye.

You have a hella (very) cool name, making you cool because I have a unique name and I’m cool… Okay just kidding I’m pretty dorky at times, and weird maybe you are too and that’s OKAY. For real though, I’ve never came across someone with your name. What must have came up to whoever named you head. You have to tell me the story behind it! I was almost named TobyL! Even your last name is gnarly! This is totally worth 25 points, so you better crack a smile! I believe you have lights eyes, I’m not sure, I’m pretty much like Dory who forgets fast so if you do, lucky you!

Finishing School by Maya Angelou

Margaret, a domestic in training works for a so called Mrs. Viola Cullinan, who she describes as very unattractive, She felt bad for her because of that, but she also couldn’t have kids due to she had no lady organs. So when she mispronounced Margaret’s name, out of pity she wouldn’t pay mind to it. As a domestic in training she learned all about Mrs. Cullinan’s favorite dishes, glasses, etc. Everything had and only had one place to be put. Through this time Margaret met a descendant of slaves who worked for the Cullinans, Ms. Glory. Later on in the essay, Mrs. Cullinan, had some of her friend’s over. One of them suggested to call Margaret, Mary instead, and so it began. Mrs. Cullinan from there on started to call her Mary. Until one day enough is enough. Dropping her favorite dishes on purpose. Mrs. Cullinan shouted out in discriminating remarks until she finally called her by her real name, of course, mispronouncing it. Margaret, leaving the door wide open as she walked out, quit her job. That was her finishing school.

Maya Angelou who wrote Finishing School, helped a lot to understand Margaret’s anger after having her name changed. Her way of setting the tone of the story, was extremely clear. For example, when she wrote “I fumed into the kitchen. That horrible woman would never have the chance to call me Mary because of I’d never work for her…” (Angelou, 96). Towards the end she perfectly show’s the anger tone dropping Mrs. Cullinan’s favorite dish and cup. “[…]As she rounded the kitchen door I let them fall on the tiled floor” (Angelou, 98). By that quote, you can tell Margaret had enough with her name being changed. Angelou did a great job setting the character’s tone.
